Old-Skool Industrial aesthetic, raw stripped-down early Goth, Somnium7 cuts through the fluff like shots on a crowded subway platform. Virginia Beach's Somnium Seven takes goth and replaces it's flowery romanticism with the real-life morbidity of urban blight and economic warfare. Then they take industrial and jam its gears into reverse to before the viral contamination of the glo-stick-techno fad. Then with a new streetwise sensibility and a sharp sociopolitical outlook the two genres are poured into a new mold shaped by the chaos of random noise. The end result is a new kind of fusion, irradiated with originality and sparking with new life.
Somnium Seven is comprised of Debra and Michael Angelo. Debra, born in Chicago, is the daughter of a legendary blues saxophonist. Debra graces S7's songs with her beautiful Voice (alto & second soprano). She has formal music education and plays a variety of instruments in addition to writing lyrics. Prior to S7 she worked with numerous bands as a session back-up vocalist. Mike hails from NYC and performs most of S7s composition and all the recording/mixing. While he has no formal training in music Mike has been playing synthesizers most of his life and began writing his own compositions in the mid 1980s. Before starting S7 he did solo experimental electronic performances under the name Frankentron and also started an Industrial band named Neural Control Disorder prior to that. His past experiences include collaborating and performing with a number of other bands and side projects in various genres of electronic music.
Somnium Seven is currently working on producing their first CD release. This full album-length CD should be available this March. S7 has also begun performing live and has played one concert in support of 3 other local bands so far. In an effort to attract more fans and increase its networking potential S7 has put great effort into web marketing. Mike has constructed a professional looking web site for the band and he and Deb both are working to expand S7s web audience by creating profiles on the various social networking portals available. Overall response to these efforts has been very good and resulted in several thousand new fans and a huge increase in song downloads. Once S7 has itself well established on the internet and a CD release a major effort is planned to shop the band to record labels. S7 is also currently seeking reviews and interviews with various music magazines and music related web portals.
Somnium Seven is working to terraform the Industrial/Goth landscape using
the influences of
past greats like Joy Division, Bauhaus
and Einsturzende Neubauten. Those influences are
then put into a recursive routine of Darwinian Evolution to create a fresh
new sound with a challenging level of
substance. Here's what some of our fans say about Somnium Seven's new brand
of sonic disruption:
"I like the tunes, they have really good development. Some of
the more noise core "experimental" stuff I've heard tends to ignore
dynamics, but you seem to have a good grasp on that. I think Aphasia Complex
is my favourite. I Look forward to hearing what you do to Decomposition.
Peace!"
Jon - The Cedars of Lebanon
"You guys have a great, no-nonsense, sound yourselves. Pretty
intense."
Dreaming Lucy
"...I'm well-impressed. and while i was listening, i was ACTUALLY
TRYING to figure out who you sounded like...and it's no one. and that's
why i'm so well impressed, which is why APHASIA COMPLEX is going on my page.
word."
