Somnium Seven records and mixes everything in a home studio. The DIY approach has some disadvantages but for the most part it allows us a great deal of flexibility and creative freedom. The majority of the equipment was found on the 2nd-hand market and much of it in need of repair. Mike performs all the repair work on the gear and even modifies it for better performance. His background in electronics is also put to use constructing custom music equipment and instruments for the studio.
In an environment mostly occupied with instant gratification it is rather absurd to spend hours, days, weeks and years developing custom samples and sound production equipment. Somnium Seven feels these efforts are not in vain. It is our way of bucking the evil known as trend. It also imparts a strong sense of originality which seems rather rare these days. We try to extend this ideal beyond our own manufactured devices and select commercial music equipment by it's popular disfavor.
Not only do we want our very own sound but it is in the Industrial
Aesthetic to use unconventional hardware for sound production. Inventiveness
has always been the core of good Industrial music.
