7 years ago an online forum had a discussion about the lyrics for the Depeche
Mode song "Somebody",
and that discussion brought together the two individuals now known as Somnium
Seven.
Both Deb and Mike have a had a life-long interest in music. They find the less mainstream music genres the most interesting and diverse which appeals to them both. Especially considering they are by definition a rather diverse family unit.
Debra and Mike Ruberto were both caught up in the 1st wave of Punk Rock, New Wave, and witnessed with great love, the birth of Goth way before it became a fashion show for bored suburban Godess fetishests. Further down the road, Industrial emerged from it's primordial slurry and became a favorite of the Somnium couple way before they met each other. Debra witnessed all of this from merry ole' London at the same time Mike discovered it's influx into the USA. The radical nature of these new sounds inspired and shaped the outlooks of both halves of the momentous union.
There are many parallels in these two lives which ultimately resulted in a superb match. Both were raised in the times of under-the-desk, nuclear air-raid drills at school. Propaganda films about those terrible commies. The sonic inventions listed above. Both are military veterans of lame economic wars with no actual enemy. Probably more importantly, both Deb and Mike are the products of a sub-nation. A nation whos national flag is a torn up plastic bag caught in a barbed-wire fence around a vacant, rubble-filled lot. The nation of the abject, The Ghetto.
