About Our Name - Somnium Seven

from the dept.
It has always been difficult to explain this name. It has multiple meanings to us.
For one it can be an allegory for the figurative pill that makes the public somnambulant...
This may be Television or even more interesting Konrad Lorenz's theory of Emotional Entropy. Or it may be related to the application of scientific investigation to the human process of dreaming (which I find disturbing).

However the simple truth of it lies in a sequence of dreams I had at the age of 16. In order to understand some details of the dreams I must provide a brief geographical pointer. The town of Plattsburgh, NY is near the north eastern corner of NY state. Very close to Canada. It sits on the Western shore of Lake Champlain. Opposite Plattsburgh across the lake is Vermont (to the East). To the southeast is the city of Burlington (cool town btw).
Now about the dreams...

Dream one: I am standing on the beach. It is a familiar public beach on Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh. I can see the familiar outline of the mountains in Vermont across the lake from me. The coloring of things is wrong. Instead of normal colors the landscape, lake and sky are all in various hues of pink and purple. Like a black & white picture tinted slightly toward the red end of the spectrum. It is calm, with a slight breeze which is only making small ripples in the water. Besides the coloring everything seems normal.

Dream two: The same as dream one but something else seems wrong. It is dead quiet. Almost anyway. I hear the movement of water as you might expect on a calm day by the lake. But other normal sounds aren't present - birds, insects, the GP paper mill nearby... nothing. Like a dead world.

Dream three: Same as two but even more wrong in some unexplainable way.

Dreams four and five: Still the same scene. I am aware that I have had this dream before. However, something is really disturbing but I'm not sure what it is exactly. I look around more than before. The scenery is the same...

Dream six: It finally dawns on me what is so wrong with the otherwise normal world around me. The sun is setting. But it is setting over Vermont.

Dream seven: Same as the previous six dreams but now I am aware of the fact that I have had the same dream for six days straight. And I am now standing knee deep in the water....

I have had many very realistic dreams. Some good. Most are unsettling though. I have been in the after life where I (or some limbo along the way) am compelled to eat the flesh of my own corporeal body. Then thrust into the dying moments of a person still alive only to finally ascend into the final destination of those who accept their own death. I have dreamed of my own life in the third person - never a good thing to do. But the dream sequence of age 16 has been one of the most deeply disturbing things I have experienced in sleep. "Behind closed eyes, realize your sight", Blue Oyster Cult knew something of this when they wrote that line. My sight has been very good since then.

So, what do you see?
